Sexually transmitted infections, or STIs, have been around ever since human beings started congregating. They share a common mode of transmission\u2014sexual contact. They are prevalent in most world populations, although the causative microbes don\u2019t have the same infection frequency in all areas.<\/p>\n

A brief note on terminology: \u201csexually transmitted infection\u201d has gradually replaced the older term \u201csexually transmitted disease\u201d because patients frequently have no symptoms or even signs of disease on physical exam. These patients still need to be treated because they may pass their infection on to others.<\/p>\n
