NJ Nurse APN Professional Designation

On March 17, 2015 we received a letter from the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General that stated the ‘only acceptable professional designation/title that may be pre-printed on New Jersey Prescription Blanks for a practitioner is “APN.”‘

The letter goes on to quote the exact law, as listed below:
“N.J.A.C. 13:37-7.9(d):
An advanced practice nurse shall include the following information on each prescription blank issued:
1) The prescribing advanced practice nurse’s full name, designation, that is, APN, address, telephone number, and certification number; “

All National Rx Security prescription blanks are printed in accordance with the law. Since receiving the letter, we have been notifying all nurse practitioners of the change, and we will continue to do so as necessary.

The Board of Nursing is requiring that all nurses order new scripts with the APN professional title.  Nurses will be permitted to use any scripts with additional or differing titles until they can obtain new scripts. The letter goes one step further to say, “Any other professional destination that a practitioner wishes to utilize on a NJPB, such as Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) is not in compliance with the Board of Nursing rules.”

Please see the letter below for further reference. If you have additional questions with regard to this notification, the Board of Nursing is asking that you call 973-504-6430.
